George Washington
From 1775 to 1783, George Washington led a group of inexperienced, ill-equipped, but passionate American patriots in a revolution against the mightiest nation on earth: Great Britain. In December 1777, Washington’s forces were attacked by an enemy even more merciless than the British. Winter.
Again and again the wind and cold and snow of Valley Forge beat down the men, who had little clothing or protection against the elements. Two to three thousand men perished a miserable death. Supplies dwindled to nothing. So did morale. Washington pleaded with Congress for assistance, but little came. He grieved at the sight of bloody footprints in the snow from his men, who had no shoes.
But Washington held a firm grip on hope. He encouraged his troops and trained them daily into a disciplined army. Against overwhelming odds, and with God’s supernatural favor backing him, Washington eventually defeated the British forces…and won freedom for America. The beloved military leader led the effort to create the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and became the first president of the United States.
Less than a year before taking office, Washington wrote this letter to his friend, General Benjamin Lincoln, who served as Major General in the Revolutionary War. George Washington, June 29, 1788:
“No one can rejoice more than I do at every step taken by the People of this great Country to preserve the Union–establish good order and government–and to render the Nation happy at home and respected abroad. No Country upon Earth ever had it more in its power to attain these blessings than United America.
Wondrously strange then, and much to be regretted indeed would it be, were we to neglect the means, and to stray from the road to which the finger of Providence has so manifestly pointed. I cannot believe it will ever come to pass! The great Author of all good has not conducted us so far on the road to happiness and glory to withdraw from us, in the hour of need, His beneficent support.
By folly and misconduct, proceeding from a variety of causes, we may now and then get bewildered; but I hope, and trust, that there is good sense and virtue enough left to bring us back into the right way before we shall be entirely lost.”[1]
George Washington, June 29, 1788

AMERICA
My country, ‘tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From ev’ry mountain side,
Let freedom ring.
My native country thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love.
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills,
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom’s song.
Let mortal tongues awake,
Let all that breathe partake,
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.
Our father’s God, to thee,
Author of liberty,
To thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom’s holy light.
Protect us by thy might,
Great God, our King.
John Adams
John Adams was a brilliant lawyer and leader of the American Revolution. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Despite strong opposition, Adams argued strongly for its adoption.
“It is true that in the beginning we aimed not at independence. But there’s a Divinity which shapes our ends. We may die, die colonists, die slaves, die it may be ignomously or on the scaffold. Be it so. Be it so! If it be the pleasure of Heaven that my country shall require the poor offering of my life, the victim shall be ready. Come when that hour may. But while I do live, let me have a country, or at least the hope of a country, and that a free country. But whatever our fate be assured this Declaration will stand. It may cost treasure and it may cost blood, but it will stand. It is my living sentiment and by the blessing of God it will be my dying sentiment. Independence now and independence forever.”
John Adams, July 3, 1776
Adam’s speech helped win the day, and America’s independence. Adams wrote to his beloved wife, Abigail, whom he honored as his adviser:
“…yesterday was decided the greatest question which was ever debated in America, and a greater perhaps never was nor will be decided among men.”
He predicted the signing of the Declaration of Independence would be commemorated every year with great festivities. And, he was right.
One day after Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote this letter to Abigail. July 3, 1776:
“It may be the will of Heaven that America shall suffer calamities still more wasting and distresses yet more dreadful. If this is to be the case, it will have this good effect, at least: it will inspire us with many virtues, which we have not, and correct many errors, follies, and vices, which threaten to disturb, dishonor, and destroy us. The furnace of affliction produces refinement, in states as well as individuals. And the new governments we are assuming, in every part, will require a purification from our vices, and an augmentation of our virtues or there will be no blessings…But I must submit all my hopes and fears to an overruling Providence; in which, unfashionable as the faith may be, I firmly believe.”
John Adams, July 3, 1776

The Battle Hymn of the Republic
Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage
where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning
of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on. Refrain
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watchfires
of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded Him an altar
in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence
by the dim and flaring lamps;
His day is marching on. Refrain
I have read a fiery Gospel writ
in burnished rows of steel;
As ye deal with my contempters,
so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the “Mother of the Savior”
crush the serpent with Her heel;
Since God is marching on. Refrain
He has sounded forth the trumpet
that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men
before his judgement seat.
O be swift, my soul, to answer him;
be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on. Refrain
In the beauty of the lilies,
Christ was born across the sea;
With a glory in His bosom
that transfigures you and me.
As He died to make men holy,
let us die to make men free.
Our God is marching on. Refrain
James Iredell
During the American Revolution, James Iredell helped organize the nation’s court system. President Washington appointed him as one of the first justices of the United States Supreme Court.
U.S. MARSHAL (calling the U.S. Supreme Court to order as the Justices enter): “The Honorable, the Chief Justice and the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! (OH yay) All persons having business before the Honorable, the Supreme Court of the United States, are admonished to draw near and give their attention, for the Court is now sitting. God save the United States and this Honorable Court!”
At the age of 38, Iredell became the youngest Supreme Court Justice at the time. On May 1, 1778, he wrote this letter:
“Review the great scenes of history: you will find mankind has always been obliged to pay dear for the blessings they enjoyed…The struggles of a great people have almost always ended in the establishment of liberty…Such a people are spoken of with admiration by all future ages…
“Their souls glow with gratitude for the virtue and self-denial of their forefathers. They consider them as patterns for their own conduct on similar occasions and are continually pointing them out to the reverence and imitation of their children. These are the glorious effects of patriotism and virtue. These are the rewards annexed to the faithful discharge of that great and honorable duty, fidelity to our country…I pray to God that the fair character I have described may be that of America to the latest ages.”
James Iredell, May 1, 1778

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL
O beautiful for spacious skies,
for amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat,
across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self control, Thy liberty in law.
O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
†America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness, And ev’ry gain divine.
O beautiful for patriot dream, that sees beyond the years, Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea![1]
Jedidiah Morse
Jedidiah Morse is known as the father of American geography. His textbooks helped educate the children of the new United States of America. Morse earned his Divinity degree at Yale, studying under the famous fiery preacher, Jonathan Edwards. His first son was Samuel Morse, the famous artist and inventor of the telegraph and the Morse Code. In Charleston, Massachusetts on April 25, 1799, Jedidiah warned his listeners in a sermon:
“To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom, and political and social happiness which mankind now enjoys. In proportion as the genuine effects of Christianity are diminished in any nation, either through unbelief, or the corruption of its doctrines, or the neglect of its institutions; in the same proportion will the people of that nation recede from the blessings of genuine freedom, and approximate the miseries of complete despotism.
“All efforts to destroy the foundations of our holy religion, ultimately tend to the subversion also of our political freedom and happiness.
“Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government, and all the blessings which flow from them, must fall with them.”
Jedediah Morse, April 25, 1799

The Star Spangled Banner
Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed
at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched
were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare,
the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there.
Oh! say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free
and the home of the brave?
Oh! thus be it ev’r when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation,
Blest with vict’ry and peace,
may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the pow’r that hath made
and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto, “In God is our trust.”
And the Star Spangled Banner
in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was a highly skilled and highly respected general in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. He campaigned passionately for the healing of the nation between the North and the South.
In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, Lee wrote this letter concerning the power of prayer.
“Soldiers! Let us humble ourselves before the Lord, our God, asking through Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, beseeching the aid of the God of our forefathers in the defense of our homes and our liberties, thanking Him for His past blessings, and imploring their continuance upon our cause and our people.
“Knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon and the supreme call for all Christians today, I pleadingly urge our people everywhere to pray. Believing that prayer is the greatest contribution that our people can make in this critical hour, I humbly urge that we take time to pray—to really pray.
“Let there be prayer at sunup, at noonday, at sundown, at midnight – all through the day. Let us pray for our children, our youth, our aged, our pastors, our homes. Let us pray for the churches.
“Let us pray for ourselves, that we may not lose the word ‘concern’ out of our Christian vocabulary. Let us pray for our nation. Let us pray for those who have never known Jesus Christ and His redeeming love, for moral forces everywhere, for our national leaders. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice.”
General Robert E. Lee, 1863

GOD BLESS AMERICA
While the storm clouds gather
Far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance
To a land that’s free.
Let us all be grateful
For a land that’s fair,
As we raise our voices
In a solemn prayer.[1]
God bless America.

Through the night with the light from above.
From the mountains to the prairies
To the oceans white with foam.

Hail holy queen
Hail Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee we cry out, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary,
Pray for us oh Holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
**History-changers target Robert E. Lee because of his position in the Confederate Army and his role in the Civil War. Lee’s father served under Gen. George Washington in the American Revolution. It seems highly unlikely that Robert E. Lee would fight to destroy a country that his father fought so hard to establish. Why did Lee choose to be in the Confederate Army? Because of Lee’s closeness to the American Revolution, he would have had an understanding of the United States, that was from the Founder’s themselves. Robert E. Lee, along with many in his time, believed that the Union needed to be preserved. But, without the rights of the States, the Union could not stand. This is a belief which many still hold today. The revisionism against Lee has nothing to do with any moral high-ground or other “issues.” Why do history-changers want to destroy the reputation of Robert E. Lee? Because there is something more sinister at play. The experience and lessons of the Civil War has actually kept civil war from happening again. Those who want to erase that experience through revisionism, want civil war to happen and destroy the United States. — Friend of Medjugorje
[1] The song, God Bless America, has an intro that few hear today. In the audio production and in this printing of The Patriotic Rosary, the intro is added.
[1] In researching the context in which George Washington said the above quote, it was discovered there was a better, more historically accurate version of this quote than what has been used in our past printings of The Patriotic Rosary. A Friend of Medjugorje’s longstanding principle of guarding against revisionism led to his decision to keep to the most historically accurate text from Washington’s letter. Therefore, starting with this printing, April 2024, the correction has been made and will be made in all future printings of The Patriotic Rosary.
